Moving or Improving
The two main reasons people begin to question their home situation is the age of their home and changes in their lifestyle. Here is a checklist for you to review both sides of the "improve and stay" or "move" issue for you and your family:
| Improve and Stay | Move | |
| 1. Review the location of your current home in relationship to your work, schools, shopping, recreation, etc. | 1. If you have a home or new location in mind, compare the location to where you live now. Is it as convenient? | |
| 2. Do you have close ties to your current neighborhood, friends, family nearby? | 2. Will your new neighborhood provide you closer access to friends and/or family? | |
| 3. Make a list of the pluses and minuses of your current home. Can you change the things that are minuses? | 3. Make a list of what you want in a new home that you cannot achieve in your current home. | |
| 4. What would it cost for you to make the changes you want in your current home? | 4. What would it cost for you to get what you want in a new home? | |
| 5. If you make the improvements you want, will it improve the financial investment of your home? | 5. List the things you would have to buy to give your new home the amenities you know you will want - new drapes, carpets, landscaping, etc. | |
| 6. If you remodel, what will be the total monthly increase in your expenses? | 6. Estimate the costs of selling your current home, costs of moving and settling-in. |
After you review the above options, you should have enough input and knowledge to proceed with whatever direction you choose.
