Moving - The Garage Sale
Prior to moving into your new home is a great time to have a garage
sale which will lighten your move. Here are some tips on how to get the
most out of your garage sale:
Signs. Have the signs directing people to your garage in high visibility
locations and easy to read. You don't want people to get lost on the
way to your house or decide to go to someone else's garage sale
because it was easier to find and the sign was more readable.
Pricing. Price everything. It will make it easier on you than having to
constantly tell people what the price is and easier on your potential
buyers to browse at will. Perhaps even a "one price" table would be
another way to make the day easier for all concerned.
Neighbors. Get your neighbor-hood or at least some of your close-by
neighbors to join you in having a garage sale. You'll get a bigger crowd
and you'll save on advertising the sale. With more people involved, you
could even have some of the neighborhood kids sell lemonade to make
some money and involve them in a neighborhood project.
Timing. Be ready early! For people who are serious garage shoppers,
they know the best stuff goes the quickest and they will be there early.
Merchandise. Have all your merchandise clean and shiny. The extra
time it will take for you to do this will pay off with higher prices for your
items.
Organization. Organize your display according to categories - kitchen
items, toys, books, children's clothes, etc. Have a mirror available for
those trying on jewelry, hats and some clothes.
Space. Spread out. Be generous with space for your merchandise and
for people to move around your tables.
Change. Have plenty of small bills and change available.
Results. Keep your prices low. You'll be disappointed if you "price
yourself out of the market" and have to haul all that stuff back in the
house. Remember, this is primarily stuff you don't want, so sell cheap.
Have fun. Even though it's a tiring day, if you make it fun, you'll enjoy
it more and perhaps, you'll make more money!
